Coaching for Students

I have spent my career struggling to fit into the music world. While many recognise this world is full of neurodivergent people, it is still ill-suited to so many of us. The stigma and judgement often start long before our talents and instrumental skills are even considered – leaving us on the back foot before we’ve even started.

Our social capacity and capabilities, processing speeds, appearances, physical space needs, issues with timekeeping… the list of potential challenges seems endless.

That sounds bleak, right? I reflect on my student years and see how much I could have benefitted from someone who really understood what and how I was experiencing the world.

Coaching is a powerful tool that can help people move through difficult times. Really identifying where the issues stem from can help you understand how your brain works – something so often missing in the constant demands to do things the ‘normal’ way. I can assure you your way is totally fine too, but how many times have you been made to doubt it?

Coaching can help you recognise the ways in which you are struggling to conform to neurotypical standards, and then develop skills with which you can reach the same (or your desired) goals. This can be life-changing.

I aim to create a rapport in a non-judgmental space, non-directive, non-hierarchical and listen with genuine interest and curiosity, leaving you feeling heard, able to unmask and way more likely to be able to engage and make progress.

I never give advice; rather, I work on the premise that you are the expert on yourself, and your own self-discovery and understanding is the most powerful tool. I will not evaluate your decisions but help you develop your decision-making skills.

Through this, together we can look at the possible actions available to you. Without judgment of progress – identifying time scales and any external or internal barriers – we will work together towards you achieving your goals without stress, trauma, meltdown or burnout.

I have seen that coaching can be a powerful and life-changing tool for navigating life. Music is an equally life changing experience, and I believe that the practice of coaching can make life as a musician more accessible and pleasurable.
